Your Itinerary
1
San José
Arrival Day
Arrive at any time — arrival transfer is included. If you land early enough, head into the city to visit a museum, shop, or explore the main plaza, a lively spot for people-watching artisan booths and street performers.
Tonight, meet the group for a welcome meeting where your Expedition Leader reviews the trip details.
2
San José → La Fortuna
3h travel
Visit a G Adventures–supported coffee cooperative, meet local farmers, and learn how coffee goes from bean to cup. After a typical lunch, continue to La Fortuna at the foot of Arenal Volcano.
This evening, visit a local home to learn traditional tortilla-making and share a home-cooked meal of black beans, plantains, and your own handmade tortillas.
3
La Fortuna
Free day
A day to explore La Fortuna at your own pace. Optional activities include stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Arenal, a soak in a naturally heated hot spring, a hike to La Fortuna Waterfall, mountain biking, the Hanging Bridges canopy trail, or a boat tour of Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge.
4
La Fortuna → Monteverde
Vehicle + boat + vehicle
Travel from La Fortuna to the cloud forests of Monteverde, crossing Lake Arenal by boat along the way. In the afternoon, choose an optional zip-lining adventure above the treetops, a visit to the CASEM women artisans' cooperative, or horseback riding through mountain trails.
5
Monteverde
Cloud forest & conservation
Hike through the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve past giant ferns and vibrant orchids, keeping an eye out for the resplendent quetzal. Afterward, visit the Monteverde Institute — a research organization supported by National Geographic — for a lecture on local conservation and reforestation work.
6
Monteverde → Manuel Antonio
6h travel
Leave the cloud forest behind and head to the Pacific coast, settling into the seaside village of Manuel Antonio. Spend the rest of the day relaxing on the beach, or opt for surfing.
7
Manuel Antonio
National park day
Discover Manuel Antonio National Park's lush forests and white-sand beaches — Costa Rica's smallest national park, home to monkeys, sloths, iguanas, and hundreds of bird species. Hike to rocky outcrops for Pacific views, or opt for a catamaran cruise, kayaking through the mangroves, or a surf lesson.
8
Manuel Antonio → San José
